Maps

The North Carolina Collection has an extensive collection of maps ranging from 17th-century maps depicting the southern coast of North America to current county and road maps. To search for maps using the library’s online catalog, enter the name of the town or county followed by the word map in the search box titled Subject. Then, on the results page, select North Carolina Collection from the Library Location facet on the left side of the page.

For instance, to find a map of Black Mountain, type Black Mountain (N.C.) — Maps  in the box titled Subject.Then, on the results page, select North Carolina Collection from the Library Location facet on the left side of the page.

Some of the North Carolina Collection’s maps are scanned and a part of  North Carolina Maps, a comprehensive, online collection of historic maps of the Tar Heel State.

Newspapers

The North Carolina Collection has a large collection of newspapers from across the state. Nearly all of these are available on microfilm for use in the Special Collections Research Room on the second floor of Wilson Library. To search the North Carolina Collection’s newspaper holdings using the online catalog, enter the name of the town or county followed by the word newspaper  in the search box titled Subject. Then, on the results page, select North Carolina Collection from the Library Location facet on the left side of the page.

For instance, to find newspapers from Edgecombe County, type Edgecombe County (N.C.) Newspapers  in the box titled Subject. Then, on the results page, select North Carolina Collection from the Library Location facet on the left side of the page.

The North Carolina Collection holds indexes for a small number of North Carolina newspapers. The State Library of North Carolina has created an online index for The News and Observer from 1926 through 1992.

Some of the North Carolina Collection’s newspaper holdings are scanned and available online. Some may require a UNC ONYEN or use of University Libraries computers for access. Sources for North Carolina newspapers include:

Photographs

The North  Carolina Collection’s Photographic Archives includes numerous collections representing all parts of  the state. Examples include the  county collection (P0001), which contains  images from each county in the state, the Durwood  Barbour Collection of North Carolina Postcards (P0077), and the North Carolina County Postcard Collection (P0052). Many of the postcards from these two collections are scanned and available via the North Carolina Postcard online collection.
