Blue Dean will join the University Libraries, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, July 1, as executive director of library development

L. Blue Dean will join the University Libraries on July 1, 2019, as executive director of library development. Dean brings to this newly expanded role nearly twenty years of fundraising leadership in the higher education and non-profit sectors.

At Carolina, she will provide strategic vision, leadership and direction for a comprehensive development program as the Library pursues an ambitious agenda emphasizing preservation, student success and engagement with the research enterprise. She will serve as a member of the Library Leadership Team and will guide the organization in achieving its goal toward the University’s capital campaign, For All Kind: The Campaign for Carolina.

“Blue is exactly the leader we need to move our fundraising efforts to the next level,” said Elaine L. Westbrooks, vice provost for University Libraries and University librarian.

“My team and I were all impressed by Blue’s accomplishments and insight, as well as her warm approach focused on building trust and relationships,” said Westbrooks.

Dean served most recently as executive director of development for Duke University’s department of medicine and the Duke Heart Center in Durham, North Carolina. She has also held fundraising positions at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, including as the University Libraries’ director of development. Her prior experience includes the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Dean holds a B.A. in English from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and she has completed advanced training in philanthropy and fundraising from the Johns Hopkins Medicine Philanthropy Institute and Duke University.
