MRC: Building Use Policies

Digital Media Lab Policies:

  • Make sure to save your work before your scheduled time is up, so you don’t cut into the next reservation.
  • Save your files in your own home folder. You have to be logged in with your Onyen to access your desktop, documents, etc.
  • Remember where you save your files so that you can find them when you return.
  • Please do not save more than one copy of your work.
  • The MRC does not provide storage media, so when you are done editing and you want to burn a DVD or copy your work to a flash drive, you will need to bring your own. DVD-R’s, CD-R’s, and flash drives are available for purchase at student stores.

Things to Note:

  • Food and drinks aren’t allowed in the Media lab.
  • Do not download or install any software onto the computers. If you need something that is not available on a computer, speak to a lab attendant.
  • Most recorded media are protected by copyright. Copying any copyrighted work that does not qualify under Fair Use will be considered an honor code violation.
  • Do not delete, peek at, or do anything else to a project if you did not create it. This will be considered an honor code violation.
  • Use headphones if you want to rock out, other people are working around you.
  • Running a little late? No problem, we’ll hold the spot you reserved for 15 minutes. But after that, it’s up for grabs.

Screening Room Policies:

Rooms 006, 205, and 207 in the Undergraduate Library are available for class viewings through the MRC. Reservations for the rooms can be made by course instructors in advance in person or online.

  • Note that food and beverages of any kind are not permitted in the screening rooms.
  • The instructor or a TA is required to accompany the class for the entire screening. If no instructor is present, the room will not be opened.

Room 006

  • Maximum occupancy of 6 persons.
  • 42″ flat-panel plasma display.
  • Supports VHS, DVD (Region 1), VCD, PAL, 16mm, slides, CD and audiocassette formats.

Rooms 205 & 207

  • Supports VHS, DVD (Region 1), VCD, PAL, 16mm, slides, CD and audiocassette formats.
  • PC running Windows XP Pro with access to network resources.
  • Laptop connection
  • Overhead projection system
  • Surround sound audio
  • Instructor’s podium with touch screen interface.

Capacities:

Room 205

• Maximum occupancy of 52.

Room 207

• Maximum occupancy of 28.

In-House Viewing

With 20 VCR/DVD and 5 Blu-ray equipped stations on the premises, you can watch any of our films or reserve materials here. The Media Resources Center also has CD, audiocassette, mini disc and record players available to patrons. None of our audio/visual playback equipment circulates. Proper identification (UNC One Card, TRLN card, Duke or NCSU student ID, Town Borrowers Card) is required for the use of all equipment at the Media Resources Center. Please note, food and beverages of any type are not permitted in the MRC.

Building Policies:

We welcome everyone to the Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Campus libraries are open to the public. In order to create a welcome and comfortable environment conducive to teaching, learning, and research, we ask for your cooperation with the following library and University policies and in accordance with local, state, and federal law.

Library building policies protect library users and staff, access to resources, and the facilities. Users engaging in disruptive or prohibited behavior- may be asked to cease or to leave the library.

Animals

Guide and service animals for people with disabilities are welcome in campus libraries. Other animals must remain outside.

Cameras

Individuals, classes, groups, or organizations wishing to photograph or film library facilities, staff, or users must first request permission from that library building’s administration. Members of the media should contact the Director of Library Communications.

Cell Phones

Set cell phones and pagers to non-audible signals. To make or take a call, please step outside or move to a stairwell or other area away from library patrons AND take your belongings with you to prevent theft.

Children

Children are welcome, but those under 14 must be under adult supervision.

Computers

Academic work has priority at library computers. Individual libraries may designate specific computers for guest use, certain academic uses, or other purposes.

Displays, Charitable Collections, and Related Activities

University students, faculty, and staff may request use of library facilities for activities that further inquiry, learning, and service at the University. These activities are at the discretion of the library and may be subject to specific conditions.

Food & Drink

Individual libraries may restrict food and drink in certain areas. Please be reasonable and responsible when bringing food and drink into the libraries. Help preserve a clean and pleasant study environment by disposing of refuse properly; alerting staff to spills; and taking care around library collections and equipment.

Wheeled Transportation (skates, skateboards, scooters, Segways, etc.)

Only equipment used by mobility-impaired patrons is allowed in the libraries.

Bicycles

Bicycles must remain outside the library buildings. Please refer to the University Transportation & Parking webpages for bike rack locations and other information.

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in any University building, including the libraries, and within 100 feet of all University facilities. Electronic cigarettes are not permitted in campus libraries.

Solicitation

Solicitation is not permitted in the libraries. See the University’s policy on the “The Use of Surfaces, Bulletin Boards, and Spaces”.

Conference Rooms

The University Libraries have a limited number of conference rooms for use by Library staff and is unable to accommodate the use of conference rooms by outside groups. Rooms at the Health Sciences Library and the Pleasants Family Assembly Room in Wilson Library may be available for use by UNC-affiliated groups.
