Reconstructing Frankenstein’s Monster: Mary Shelley’s World in Print

April 24, 2018

Opening April 26, 2018

“Reconstructing Frankenstein’s Monster: Mary Shelley’s World in Print” is a class-curated, full-scale exhibition about the world in which Mary Shelley wrote her classic novel “Frankenstein.” The exhibition focuses on themes such as global exploration, political turmoil in England and France, medical experimentation and sexual liberation.

The exhibition was curated by undergraduate students from Professor Jeanne Moskal’s English 295 Honors class. Guided by librarians and exhibition specialists at the Wilson Special Collections Library, the students spent the spring semester using rare materials from the Wilson Special Collections Library to research and develop the exhibition.

Among the items on view will be the Library’s first edition of “Frankenstein,” along with a newly acquired second edition, important because of significant changes.

“Reconstructing Frankenstein’s Monster: Mary Shelley’s World in Print” will be on view in the Melba Remig Saltarelli Exhibit Room in Wilson Library through August 26, 2018.

On April 26, 2018, members of English 295H will present their original research during an opening celebration for the exhibition. The event is free and open to the public. See this event information in the calendar
