Media Lab

Fall Services

While the Media Lab and Recording Spaces (Audio Lab and Podcast Studio) are closed to the public for the Fall, we continue to offer media instruction and support. We have full course instruction video sessions on podcasting using Adobe Audition and video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro and can offer remote workshops via Zoom as well. Please contact us at mediadc@unc.edu to schedule an instruction session. While we are not currently circulating audio or video recording equipment, the MDC can still provide media production guidance if devices such as laptops and smartphones have been used for recording. Video and audio recorded on these devices can be edited in Adobe’s Audition and Premiere, which offer a full-fledged, professional editing environment. For a lighter, mobile-oriented video editing experience, you may want to look at our guides on Adobe Rush. Additionally, we recommend and support instruction with Adobe Spark. Spark is an accessible platform for online media projects, used for creating visual narratives, web pages, graphic posters, book covers, and more. Here is our guide to using Adobe Spark. In addition to instruction, we are also available to host Zoom sessions to cover the software and workshop to troubleshoot any questions students may have. If you would like to schedule instruction, workshops, or support, just let us know! Thanks, MDC Team

Video Editing Suites
Our Lenovo workstations allow you to use a wide range of professional video editing and multimedia software, including Adobe Premiere and After Effects CC. Make a project from the ground up with professional results.

Audio Lab

Our audio lab is equipped with a Lenovo desktop, which houses an array of digital editing software, including Audition and Reason 10, allowing everybody from the beginner to the pro to create music from the ground up.

Podcast Studio

In the podcast studio, you can record podcasts or any audio files using our studio quality mics and headphones.  Just bring your laptop with your favorite recording software, plug in the USB and you are ready to record.  If you don’t have your own software, we recommend getting the Adobe Creative Cloud, available at no cost for students.  Reservations are required prior to room use.

Media Lab Classes

The MDC Digital Media Lab offers free one-on-one and small group instruction. We provide instruction on Adobe’s audio and video applications and our production equipment. Additionally, we can tailor our instruction based on the nature of the project at hand. We can accommodate you between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please email mediadc@unc.edu with your requested date and time and an alternate, and let us know what you would like to learn. Library sessions are open to current UNC students, faculty or staff. Do you or any of the students in your class have accommodation needs we should take into account when planning and teaching the library session? If yes, please describe how we can best accommodate those needs, ideally with 5 business days’ notice before the session.

To schedule a production instruction session, please complete the Production Instruction Form or email mediadc@unc.edu with your requested date and time and an alternate, along with a sentence or two on the students’ prospective assignment (video, audio, image editing, etc). We can also reserve a block of digital video-cameras or audio recorders and other equipment for your students for up to 5 days. Please be aware that the lab and equipment calendars fill up pretty quickly towards the end of a semester, so the earlier you schedule your class, the better the chances are that we can get you everything you need!
