Update: Library agreement with SAGE Publishing opened access to research in 2020

February 17, 2021

More than 60 scholarly articles by UNC-Chapel Hill scholars reached a worldwide audience in 2020, free of paywalls or subscription requirements. The universal access comes thanks to the University Libraries’ groundbreaking open access pilot agreement with SAGE Publishing.

Most authors who wish to offer open access to their research must pay a fee to the publisher. Through the agreement, part of the Library’s subscription to SAGE journals in 2020 covered these open access charges on behalf of the scholars.

The 62 articles reflect the range of groundbreaking research that takes place every day at Carolina. They include timely medical findings about COVID-19, as well as articles exploring other facets of the pandemic, such as the impact of remote education on elementary school students and online breastfeeding instruction for homebound expectant mothers.

Also among the articles is a study of “The Sociology of Race and Racism in the Digital Society” by MacArthur Fellow and associate professor Tressie McMillan Cottom.

“The research that happens at a public university should be available to the public,” said Vice Provost for University Libraries and University Librarian Elaine L. Westbrooks. “Carolina’s library is leading the transformation to a more open future for scholarly publishing.”

As part of these efforts, the University Libraries in 2020 declined to renew a $2.6 million contract with the world’s largest academic publisher, Elsevier, because the license failed to provide affordability, sustainability, transparency and openness.

The agreement with SAGE Publishing will continue in 2021. Eligible UNC-Chapel Hill authors whose manuscript has been accepted by SAGE will receive an email from the publisher that explains the options for open access publishing.

Authors who would like to learn more may contact their subject liaison or message the Library’s Sustainable Scholarship team.

Congratulations to the authors of these 62 articles, the first to be covered by the ongoing agreement between the University Libraries and SAGE Publishing!
