Welcome the 2023-2024 Carolina Academic Library Associates

The University Libraries is pleased to announce the 2023-24 cohort of Carolina Academic Library Associates (CALAs).  
The CALA program provides graduate students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in an academic library during their graduate studies. It is a collaboration between the University Libraries and Carolina’s School of Information and Library Sciences (SILS).

Emma Barrett-Catton

 

Emma Barrett-Catton holds a B.S. in bioengineering from Santa Clara University and a master’s in pharmaceutical sciences and drug design from University of Montana. Previously a graduate student researcher in a lab at the University of Montana, Emma was the lead on a project researching the manufacturability of a single-application antibiotic treatment for outer ear infections. Emma will be working in the Health Sciences Library with Emily Jones.

Lani Chappell holds a B.A. in American studies from Yale University. Lani has studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Rabat, Morocco, while also working in several museums, including the Palestine Museum US in Woodbridge, CT and the Telfair Museums in Savannah, GA, where she created digital humanities content using ArcGIS. Lani will be working with Caroline Keizer in Davis Technical Services. 

 

 

Luke Cimarusti

 

Luke Cimarusti holds a B.A. in art history with a minor in film and media studies from Northwestern University. A radio DJ in Evanston-Chicago, Luke previously worked at the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art in Evanston, Illinois, and at The Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois, where they served as conservation services assistant in the library’s book conservation lab. Luke will be working with Jessica Venlet in University Archives and Records Management. 

 

 

Shira Greer

 

Shira Greer holds a B.A. in American studies, with minors in Africana studies, data science and statistics, and women, gender and sexuality studies from the University of Richmond. While there, Shira was an archival intern and helped to process a collection from the Greater Richmond Transit Company. She also led the Black Student Coalition in advocating for campus building name changes and the creation of an Africana studies department, among other Black student welfare concerns. Shira will be working in the Southern Historical Collection with Chaitra Powell and Meaghan Alston.

Ikra Javed in User Experience with Nora Burmeister. 

Alona Norwood in the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center with Lisa Gregory. 

Denise Mantey University Archives and Records Management with Nick Graham. 

Saija Wilson in Wilson Special Collections Technical Services with Jackie Dean and Eileen Dewitya. 


Last, but not least, congratulations to the spring 2023 graduating CALAs! 

Brianna McGruder worked in the Southern Historical Collection with Chaitra Powell. Brianna began a role with the University Libraries in June as a community-driven archives program manager.

Cas Saroza worked in the Undergraduate Library and Media and Design Center with Dayna Durbin and Winifred Metz. Cas is currently a fellow at the North Carolina State University Libraries specializing in access services and collections strategy.

Rolando Rodriguez worked in Davis Research and Instructional Services and Digital Research Services with Sarah Morris and Amanda Henley. Rolando began a permanent role with the University Libraries in June as a humanities data librarian. 

María Tudela worked in Davis Administration and Research and Instructional Services with Monica Figueroa and Kristan Shawgo. María is now a humanities and social sciences librarian at Illinois State University Milner Library.
