Today, the staff of the Wilson Special Collections Library want to say, “Thank you, Florence!”

In October 2016, the Library celebrated a generous gift of $5 million from alumna Florence Fearrington.

The gift, the largest ever made to Carolina’s libraries‚ will support Wilson Library. In recognition, the grand reading room in Wilson Library has been renamed the Fearrington Reading Room.

Fearrington has earmarked $1 million of her gift to help update the reading room and adjacent exhibition areas. The remaining $4 million will create the Fearrington Special Collections Library Fund.

This transformational gift builds on the strength of UNC’s historic special collections. It will help librarians and archivists to bring significant materials to Carolina, to connect with students and scholars at all levels, and to experiment and innovate. It’s a gift that will make a difference to Tar Heels for generations to come.
