Associate University Librarian for Special Collections and Director of Wilson Library
ANNOUNCEMENT OF PROFESSIONAL VACANCY
The University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a team-oriented and engaged Associate University Librarian for Special Collections and Director of Wilson Library to join our staff.
Reporting to the Vice Provost for University Libraries and University Librarian, the Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Special Collections and Director of Wilson Library serves as a member of the University Libraries’ leadership team and is responsible for the Special Collections program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Libraries. This program includes five curatorial units (the North Carolina, Rare Book, Southern Folklife, and Southern Historical Collections; and University Archives and Records Management); Research and Instructional Services; Technical Services (cataloging and archival processing); Preservation and Conservation Services, a unit that serves both general and special collections across formats; the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center; and exhibitions and engagement programs. The work of these departments is carried out by a team of over 50 staff who comprise almost 20% of the Libraries’ total workforce.
The AUL leads the Special Collections and Wilson Library, developing and sustaining a vision for the unit that is aligned with future directions and strategic goals of the University Libraries. The AUL fulfills this responsibility by leading, supporting, and developing a dynamic Special Collections team in creating and implementing innovative, collaborative, and sustainable practices, collections, services, and programs; nurtures and grows strategic collaborations; actively promotes and incorporates tools and methods that create new opportunities for preservation, research, teaching, and public service engagement; and oversees Wilson Library facilities and infrastructure.
In conjunction with the University Librarian, the AUL oversees gift and endowment funds across the Special Collections with a total annual income of approximately $2 million per year, representing about half of the University Libraries total endowment income, providing oversight of funds management and strategic allocation. The AUL is actively engaged in fundraising and donor stewardship in collaboration with the University Librarian and the University Libraries’ development office. They identify and develop grant-funding opportunities and support grant management.
The AUL participates in university-wide programs as appropriate and may represent the entire library system locally, regionally, or nationally. The AUL promotes a culture of collaboration and is an engaged member of the campus community to advance strategic priorities. The AUL proactively advances the University Libraries’ commitment to inclusive excellence, helping to maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and open educational and workplace climate for all and to create an environment of respect and collaboration where vision and innovation can flourish.
Wilson Library, the building that houses the Special Collections, is entering the first phase of a larger capital improvement project that will temporarily relocate all collections and staff for a minimum of two years. During this significant operational disruption, the AUL will support the work already underway to prepare for this project; oversee adjusted service levels and develop creative programming that maintains the visibility of the Special Collections; nurture relationships with partners and constituents; ensure active engagement of Special Collections staff; and, with the University Librarian and the Executive Director of Library Development, participate in fundraising for future phases of the project. The AUL will also lead on the transition back to regular operations at the conclusion of this phase of the project.
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or other appropriate degree(s)
- Significant achievement in the administration of special collections or other cultural or research-oriented institution, including the demonstrated ability to lead the development of innovative programs
- Supervisory experience and a record of success in staff and organizational development, including change management
- Ability to provide strategic alignment and direction for special collections in the research university ecosystem
- Demonstrated leadership at regional and national levels on special collections issues
- Experience with library or special collections facilities management
- Experience creating welcoming and inclusive learning and research environments
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse user communities, including students, faculty, researchers, colleagues, and community members
- Strong public presentation and excellent written communication skills
- Advanced degree in a relevant or related field
- Understanding of the issues of scholarly communication and the challenges faced by the 21st century research library
- Demonstrated commitment to excellence in research and teaching
- Experience with library facilities renovation projects
- Experience in collection development and management and with technologies for preservation, access, research, and teaching
- Demonstrated success with development activities, fundraising, and grants
- Commitment to and demonstrated success in the areas of professional service and activity
- Demonstrated leadership at the national, regional, and state levels
- Familiarity with program assessment methodologies

Salary and Benefits
This is a twelve-month, non-faculty academic librarian appointment. Standard state benefits include annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement. The salary range for the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections and Director of Wilson Library position begins at $82,200. The University Libraries intend to hire at a minimum of $145,000, with a salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
