Artificial Intelligence at the University Libraries

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of machines to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence—such as understanding language, recognizing patterns and generating content. Generative AI (GenAI), a rapidly evolving branch of AI, can create new text, images, code and more based on user input.

The University Libraries is committed to ensuring that all Tar Heels have access to AI tools and the knowledge to use them thoughtfully. We’re not here to tell you to use AI – we’re here to help you understand it. Access, ethics, and privacy are foundational to all of our programming, so you can make informed decisions in a world shaped by AI.

Library AI Studio

The Library AI Studio (located in Davis Library) provides collaborative space and support to those looking to build AI solutions. The Studio is a project sponsored by the Office of the Provost’s AI Acceleration Program and shares space with the Library Data Services Desk.

Featured Project

Building Student AI Literacy

The Carolina AI Literacy Initiative, led by librarian Dayna Durbin in collaboration with Professor Dan Anderson, was created to help students navigate the ethical and responsible use of Generative AI tools like ChatGPT. Through workshops, modules, and videos, the initiative teaches skills such as prompt writing, bias detection, fact-checking, and avoiding plagiarism. Building on the Libraries’ tradition of promoting information literacy, the program equips students with the knowledge to use AI tools thoughtfully and confidently in academic settings.
