Banned Books Week is October 5-11

Banned Books Week is an annual opportunity to come together and celebrate our right to read in the face of censorship. This year, Banned Books Week will take place October 5-11 with the theme “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.”
As part of the national Banned Books Week, the University Libraries is holding events focused on the importance of free and open access to information. See the listings below to learn how you can participate in Banned Books Week activities on campus.
Stand with the Banned: A Banned Books Public Reading
Wednesday, Oct. 8
10:30 a.m. -12 pm
Manning Hall
Join the School of Information and Library Science, University Libraries, and the Hussman School of Journalism and Media in celebrating our First Amendment rights with a public reading of banned and challenged books.
As part of the event, members of the Carolina community will read aloud from their favorite banned or challenged book on the steps of Manning Hall. There will also be opportunities to make a Banned Books Week button and check out banned books from the Libraries.
This event is free and open to the public and counts as a CLE credit.
Movie Screening: The Librarians
Thursday, Oct. 9
6:30-9 p.m.
The Varsity Theater
Join the University Libraries for a special Banned Books Week screening of “The Librarians,” a 2025 documentary from director Kim A. Snyder. In “The Librarians,” librarians from across the U.S. come together to defend democracy and intellectual freedom in the face of unprecedented censorship in Texas, Florida, and beyond.
The film will be introduced by Dr. Francesca Tripodi, professor at UNC’s School of Information and Library Science and principal investigator at the Center for Information Technology and Public Life (CITAP) at UNC-Chapel Hill.
This event is free and open to the public and counts as a CLE credit.
