University Archives serves as the institutional memory of the University of North Carolina and is committed to maintaining the records that document its history. This means preserving records created by university founders, as well as actively collecting documents that reflect the university today. Records generated by today’s faculty, student organizations, and academic and administrative departments are considered to be historically valuable, and the transfer of these records to University Archives ensures that they will persist as documentation of the university’s activities for years to come. Because the university is a public institution, the records generated by the university and its employees are public records governed by North Carolina’s Public Records Law and the university’s General Records Retention and Disposition Schedule. If you have records that fit within the scope of University Archives that you would like to transfer or donate, click the link on the right appropriate to your position in the university for next steps in transferring records.
