Stone Center: Course Reserves

UNC instructors may place items on reserve at the Stone Center Library (SCL) each semester. Reserve books are shelved behind the SCL Service Desk and can be checked out for 2 hours at a time. Most reserve books can be taken out of the library for that 2-hour period, but some are designated Library Use Only at the instructor’s or the library’s discretion.

Requesting Reserves for Your Course

Instructors may place up to 30 volumes on reserve at the Stone Center Library for each course. Your reserves can include books from other libraries on campus; they will be transferred from their home location (e.g. Davis Library) to the Stone Center Library reserve shelves for the duration of the semester.

As of Spring 2016, we are using a new reserves system that allows you to add, remove, and edit your reserve materials directly, and is for both electronic and physical reserve materials. If your course has a Sakai page, you can access your reserves by clicking on the “Library Reserves” tab. If your course does not have a Sakai page, your materials will be accessible via the “Access course reserves” link in the middle of the main library web page (library.unc.edu).

In addition to the upgraded system, we are pleased to announce that we can now find and scan book excerpts and articles for placement on electronic reserve.

Here is a short (5-minute) walkthrough of the new course reserves system from a faculty viewpoint (viewing courses, adding materials, submitting requests):

You may also submit reserve requests by completing this form and either dropping it off at the Stone Center Library or sending it to the Stone Center Library Reserves Staff, for processing. (Campus Mail: Stone Center Library, CB# 5250)

Please submit your requests for course reserves well enough in advance that we will have time to process them and resolve any problems. We ask that you send your reserve requests by August 1 for the fall semester, by December 15* for the spring semester, and by April 15 for the summer sessions.

Please note that this process applies *book reserves* only.

Electronic Reserves

All electronic reserves are handled through the Undergraduate Library in a separate process. Visit the Reserves page for additional information.

Reserve Loan Policies

Reserve books in the Stone Center Library are shelved behind the Service Desk. To request a book from reserve, just ask at the desk. It is helpful if you have the call number, but we can help you to look it up if you’re not sure.

Books on reserve at the Stone Center Library can be checked out for 2 hours. If you check out a reserve book less than 2 hours before the library is scheduled to close and the book is not Library Use Only, you may keep the book overnight. It will be due back within 1 hour of the library’s opening time the next day.

Overdue fines for reserve books are $1 per hour overdue.
