Position Description
The University Libraries consists of nine physical library locations in eight buildings on UNC’s campus. Combined, they measure over 1 million square feet of space, and include iconic, valuable, and important Library facilities and collections that are vital to the University’s educational mission. Over 2.5 million people visit the University Libraries each year, and the library has approximately 260 full-time staff and 280 student employees providing comprehensive library and information services to students, faculty, staff, and citizens of the state.

As charged by the University Libraries’ Reckoning Initiative, the library facilities team is committed to making library spaces inclusive and accessible to all of our users, and to building the sense of belonging in our spaces.

This position serves as the second Facility Maintenance Technician for the UNC Chapel Hill Libraries. Supervised by and working together with the Library Facilities Manager, this position will work to maintain Library building facilities and workspaces with the purpose of supporting and improving the quality of worklife and the user experience.

This position will have full-time responsibilities for the facility and maintenance needs of the Libraries and will have joint responsibility for the daily physical operation of the Libraries’ buildings along with the Library Facilities Manager.

Responsibilities include:
•Provides support and coordination and performs skilled trade work for facility and maintenance issues in Library buildings, including electrical and mechanical systems; security and building access systems; temperature and humidity; cleanliness and safety; plumbing; furniture and equipment; and ongoing wear and tear.
•Assists with the coordination of work and serves as a technical resource with UNC Facilities Services, outside contractors, and in-house repairs.
•Assists with health and safety matters such as communicating concerns to tenants, coordinating fire alarm and environmental testing, and coordinating or completing communications in response to campus emergencies.
•Applies and interprets rules and regulations in large, publicly accessible buildings, ensuring that operations are completed in accord with federal, state, institutional and technical trade regulations and specifications as applicable.
•Maintains knowledge of University policies related to building management (e.g. use of facilities, smoking, posting signs, key control, etc.) and informs building occupants of procedures.
•Serves as one of the Libraries’ primary contacts for off-hour emergencies involving building systems. Communicates and works with UNC Police, Facilities Services, Environmental Health and Safety, and designated Library staff for off-hour emergencies relating to buildings and grounds.
•Supports telecommunications, receiving and delivery of commodities, surplus, recycling, inventory tagging and tracking, and van maintenance and reservations.
•Serves as Ex Officio member of the Disaster Preparedness Committee.
•Maintains records and documentation.

Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

•General knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials used in the general maintenance and repair of buildings and machinery.
•Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form and to maintain effective relationships with a wide variety of diverse constituencies.
•Ability to function independently.
•Prioritization and time management skills.
•Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including general knowledge of spreadsheet applications for budgeting purposes.
•Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
•Ability to operate more common types of shop or wood working equipment.

Preferred Qualifications
•Building or Facilities experience in an academic, educational, nonprofit, or corporate environment.
•Experience communicating and delegating project priorities to external trades people and vendors.
•Customer service experience.

Required Licenses/Certifications
Skill or trade in one or more of the following areas: Building Trades, Construction, Carpentry, General Contractor, or others.

Special Physical and Mental Requirements
•Ability to stand for long periods of time.
•Ability to climb stairs and ladders in the performance of building and facilities maintenance work.
•Physical strength to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks, with or without accommodation.

Position/Schedule Requirements
On-call occasionally, Valid NC Driver’s License

Work Schedule
Monday-Friday, 7:00am-4:00pm or 8:00am-5:00pm
