Position Description
NOTE: This Accountant position is open to permanent, time-limited and layoff priority employees of UNC-Chapel Hill only. The Accountant serves as an accounting professional, performing a range of budgeting, accounting, reporting and business-related duties.  Duties includes the creation and management of multiple library budgets, multi-year forecasts, initiating budget adjustments, accounting for results, fund maintenance for all 300+ endowment and gift funds, and reporting on financial data for grant budgets, operating budgets, and salary/wage budgets.

The Accountant helps design, implement and oversee the processes and reports needed for budget tracking and spending, helping to ensure attainment of the libraries’ spending goals.  This position is also expected to identify, implement and manage appropriate internal controls to successfully perform financial work.  Successful completion of this work requires planning and coordination across multiple library departments and library functions.

The successful candidate’s reporting work is expected to be decision-ready.  They will provide business information, strategy, guidance, and technical support to help achieve the Libraries’ business needs.  This includes responsibility for negotiating and managing contracts in preparation for Office of Legal Counsel review.

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in accounting; or Associate’s degree in business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The Accountant must have:

  • Strongly demonstrated fiscal/accounting skills;
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of finance, general accounting practices, business management, and fund accounting;
  • Significant experience and skill with finance and business-oriented software packages, such as spreadsheet applications, accounting packages, inventory management systems, project management tools or enterprise level software (i.e., PeopleSoft);
  • Experience with finance;
  • Knowledge of data manipulation and analysis;
  • Demonstrated expertise with numbers, charts and tables.

Preferred Qualifications
Successful experience and direct knowledge in managing library budgets, business processes and applying underlying accounting principles in a university setting is preferable.

Position/Schedule Requirements
Night work occasionally, On-call occasionally, Weekend work occasionally

Work Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm
