Greeting from University Librarian María R. Estorino
Dear Carolina Community,
It’s the honor of a lifetime to write to you today as UNC-Chapel Hill’s 11th University Librarian.
When I first arrived here in 2017, colleagues from around the country reached out to say, “Carolina has such wonderful libraries.” They’re absolutely right.
Carolina’s libraries are the very heart of our campus community, full of amazing collections, innovative services and, most importantly, the committed, creative staff experts who are the very bedrock of our excellence and success.
Growing up in Miami with parents who were Cuban refugees, I learned the values of community, belonging, and mutual support early on. These values are part of what drew me to the field of library and archival practice, and they have always guided my career.
Making sure those values continue to animate Carolina’s libraries in our changed and changing world is the work that lies ahead.
I welcome the opportunity to imagine and build with all of you a dynamic, inclusive future for the University Libraries—one that’s rooted in the research, learning and service missions of Carolina; in the collaborative culture of our University; and in the dreams and ambitions of every Tar Heel.
The opportunities for creative and intellectual partnerships are boundless. Working together, we can realize something greater and better than any of us can accomplish alone. I can’t wait to get started!

Querida comunidad de Carolina:
Es el gran honor de mi vida escribirles a ustedes hoy como la 11ª Bibliotecaria de la University of North Carolina en Chapel Hill.
Cuando llegué aquí en el 2017, colegas de diferentes partes del país me contactaron para decirme, “Carolina tiene bibliotecas maravillosas”. Ellos estaban en lo cierto.
Las bibliotecas de Carolina son el corazón de nuestra comunidad universitaria, están llenas de espectaculares colecciones, servicios innovadores y, más importante aún, cuentan con un equipo creativo, compuesto por expertos comprometidos con nuestra comunidad, que constituyen la razón principal de nuestra excelencia y de los logros que hemos alcanzado.
Crecí en Miami, mis padres fueron refugiados cubanos y de ellos aprendí, desde mi niñez, lo importante de ser parte de una comunidad y el valor de la ayuda mutua entre todos. Estos valores forman parte de las razones que me inclinaron al campo de bibliotecas y archivo y han guiado mi carrera desde sus inicios.
Asegurar de que estos valores continuarán animando las bibliotecas de Carolina en nuestro mundo cambiante es el trabajo que tenemos por delante.
Yo le doy la bienvenida a la oportunidad de imaginar y construir junto a ustedes un futuro dinámico e inclusivo para las bibliotecas de la Universidad, un futuro enraizado en las misiones investigativas, de aprendizaje y servicio de Carolina, en la cultura de cooperación de nuestra Universidad y en los sueños y las aspiraciones de cada “Tar Heel”.
Las oportunidades para colaboraciones creativas e intelectuales no tienen límites. Trabajando unidos, podemos alcanzar metas mayores y mejores que lo que puede hacer cada uno por sí solo. Por mi parte, no puedo esperar para comenzar.
