New Study and Partnership Spaces Coming to Health Sciences Library

August 26, 2019

Refurbishment work will take place in the Health Sciences Library as we enhance individual and group study spaces on the fourth floor and welcome Project LABOR as a new collaborative partner on the third floor.

Work will begin in late August 2019 and will continue for several months. Access to these floors will be unavailable or heavily disrupted during the upgrades.

Health Sciences Library 3rd floor

Refurbishment work will take place in the Health Sciences Library as we enhance individual and group study spaces on the fourth floor and welcome Project LABOR on the third floor.

Study space will continue to be available on all other levels of the library. We will also open room 527 as additional study space beginning on Monday, September 16.

Fourth floor: improved study spaces

  • Seven new group study rooms with monitors for connecting your laptop, and plenty of glass walls to make things brighter.
  • Additional tables, comfortable chairs and more power throughout the floor.
  • New whiteboard walls for all your notes and ideas.
  • New carpeting.

Third floor: collaborative partner spaces

  • Project LABOR, an initiative of the School of Medicine, received $14 million in funding earlier this year from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to study ways to improve pregnancy outcomes in the world’s poorest countries.
  • The Office of Interprofessional Education and Practice (IPEP) is a campus initiative to integrate interprofessional learning and collaboration in the health affairs schools. The longtime IPEP offices on the third floor will temporarily move to the second floor during construction.
  • Carolina Health Informatics Program (CHIP), an interdisciplinary research and training program for the use of informatics in human health, will upgrade its offices September 8-13 but will not relocate during the Health Sciences Library space redesign project.

We look forward to new opportunities for close collaboration, research and project development with three key partners whose work intersects with that of the Health Sciences Library:

Please pardon the disruption as we redesign these spaces. We welcome your questions at hsl.lib.unc.edu/feedback.
