Sir Walter Raleigh has been called “the best hated man in the world,” “the greatest Renaissance man in England” and “Fortune’s tennis ball.” Although he never reached North Carolina, Raleigh’s presence looms large in the state whose capital bears his name.
The University Libraries exhibition “Sir Walter Uncloaked: The Man, the Myths, the Legacy” takes a lighthearted look at Raleigh and his influence on history and popular culture.
Visitors to the North Carolina Collection Gallery at the Wilson Special Collections Library will learn about key events in Raleigh’s life and how he has been depicted on currency and in popular culture, including advertising, romance novels, cartoons and children’s books.
“Sir Walter Uncloaked: The Man, the Myths, the Legacy” is presented in conjunction with “Raleigh 400: A Conference on Sir Walter Raleigh Four Hundred Years After His Death.” The scholarly conference will take place September 6 – 8, 2018, at Wilson Library.
The exhibition will be on view through January 31, 2019. It is free and open to the public. Also on view, through January 6, 2019, will be “Histories of the World: Global History in the Age of Discovery” in Wilson Library’s Melba Remig Saltarelli Exhibit Room.
