Davis Library Infrastructure Project to Begin in June 2017

August 24, 2017

Davis LIbrary Infrastructure Project graphicA two-year project to upgrade infrastructure in Davis Library will soon begin. This project will install fire sprinklers throughout the building and will upgrade an external fire pump. The anticipated start date is in mid-June.

Davis Library will remain open and operational throughout the project period. However, areas throughout the library will be closed for several months at a time.

If you need books from a stack level during a time when that level is closed, we will gladly retrieve the books for you and deliver them to the service desk for pick-up.

If you have an assigned carrel or a faculty office in Davis Library, we will contact you well in advance of work on your floor to arrange a temporary relocation. During the project period, we may not be able to make new carrel or office assignments if you do not already have one.

The tentative work timeline is below. Look for additional communications to the campus community as the project advances. Please note that time frames are approximate and subject to change:

Phase I: Begin June 2017

  • First floor staff work areas
  • J. Charles Morrow III Room (first floor, overlooking Pit)
  • Research Hub (second floor)

During this phase, Research Hub and Odum Institute services and consultations will be available on the north side of the second floor (room 295). The Liquid Galaxy Google Earth Display and the Research Hub presentation space will not be available.

Phase II: Begin Fall 2017

  • Administrative offices

Phase III: Begin Late 2017/Early 2018

  • Floors 7 and 8

Phase IV

  • Floors 5 and 6

Phase V

  • Nelson Ferebee Taylor Reading Room (first floor, north side) and adjacent staff offices
  • Building entrance and gallery

Phase VI

  • Service desk area (first floor)
  • Floors 3 and 4

Phase VII

  • Basement (Government Documents and Microforms)

The University’s office of Facilities Services will oversee this infrastructure project.

For questions about the impact of this work on library operations and services, please ask at the Davis Library service desk or contact the Library.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we begin this important project.
