The University Library’s Interlibrary Services Department supports the research, teaching, and learning needs of the UNC Chapel Hill community by expanding the range of materials available beyond the physical and electronic collections of the University Libraries. The Department acts as a resource for other libraries and provides access to the University Library’s collections by supplying loans and copies to local, state, national, and international libraries for use by their patrons.
The Lending Coordinator in the Interlibrary Services Department coordinates the activities of the Lending Section to provide expedited document delivery service to our TRLN partners and prompt interlibrary loan services to other requesting libraries. This position serves as the main liaison with requesting libraries, campus libraries, and Davis Library departments; responds to queries via email, telephone, and mail; and manages the Lending Section email account. This position hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates 5-7 student assistants.
This position oversees the processing of Loan requests from local, state, national and international libraries, and ensures materials are promptly paged, checked out, mailed, and database records are updated. This position manages the circulation of materials loaned from the University Library collections to ensure their timely return by renewing and recalling items, sending overdue notices, and overseeing the receipt of returned materials.
This position manages and maintains the financial functions for the Lending Section including producing invoices, processing credit card payments, and working closely with the Library’s Fiscal Services Department to receive payments and resolve billing issues.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in library services, office support, or related field; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The Lending Coordinator must have the ability to work independently in a team setting; aptitude for detailed work; flexibility and ability to shift priorities quickly; strong communication and interpersonal skills. Strong computer skills and experience with Windows applications. Working knowledge of the Internet and strong search skills in databases and web.
Demonstrated experience with resource sharing and other library software systems (ILLiad, WorldShare ILL, Sierra). Experience with print and electronic sources. Bachelor’s degree; competence in a foreign language with bibliographic knowledge of others; strong problem solving abilities; related work experience in an academic library and a commitment to public service. Supervisory experience.
