POSITION: Community Engagement and Health Literacy Librarian

The Health Sciences Library seeks a Community Engagement and Health Literacy Librarian to provide leadership for the library’s community engagement activities, including collaborating with health care professionals as well as community groups. This position will be responsible for the management and continued development of consumer health and patient education resources and services (including health literacy training) for health professionals and students in UNC Health Affairs schools, UNC Health Care, and community partners throughout the state. This position will serve as HSL liaison to the UNC Hospitals’ patient education committees, information resource centers, and other units of UNC Health Care involved in patient education activities. This position will also direct HSL outreach to the citizens of North Carolina through NC Health Info, and will direct work with public libraries and community agencies.
This position will provide the leadership in Health Literacy training for the UNC Health Affairs campuses. In collaboration with faculty and liaison librarians, responsibilities may include:
- Develop curricula for teaching health professionals best practices for health literacy and methods for communicating with patients.
- Develop learning modules using active learning methods and innovative educational technologies. This may include developing modules to place on the organization’s Learning Management System (LMS).
- Present patient literacy concepts to departmental groups, hospital services, medical residents, and Health Affairs students.
- Convert scientific information into appropriate literacy level materials for use in patient-clinician interactions.
- Consult with health professionals and students on methods for improving patient communication.
This position will lead in the development of outreach with community groups and individuals who want to learn more about finding good health information and managing their health concerns. Responsibilities will include:
- Design and teach classes on consumer health topics, e-health, and evaluation of Internet resources.
- Participate in planning services for the public and collaborate with other HSL staff to increase awareness of HSL’s services to consumers.
- Lead the website planning for NC Health Info. Collaborate with HSL staff on web site redesign activities. Oversee expansion of content and possible integration with other information and referral resources.
- Conduct outreach projects and develop a plan for using evaluative tools and measures to ensure that project goals are achieved.
- Promote HSL’s role in developing and promoting consumer health resources through community presentations, professional conferences and interviews with the media. Lead and coordinate research activities.
- Train and supervise graduate students and/or support staff and librarians in the AHEC and Outreach Services department, other HSL departments, and outside agencies who participate in health education and community engagement. Develop health information partnerships with health-related agencies and organizations.
REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or a related advanced degree. Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in an academic health sciences library, hospital library, or other academic setting supporting consumer health, patient education, or patient advocacy. Demonstrated understanding and teaching of consumer health, health literacy, patient education, and/or doctor-patient communication. Experience providing consumer health and patient education information to diverse client groups and ability to use technology to deliver information services and instruction at the point of need. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and instruction skills. Demonstrated commitment to continued professional development.
PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience teaching adults using emerging technologies and instructional methods. Experience developing online courses using instructional design software like Camtasia or Captivate. Experience developing, executing, and assessing results of community partnerships and projects. Experience in project management, particularly in assessing impacts of internally- and externally-funded projects. Experience with supervision.

Salary and Benefits
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment; salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
