University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Makers and Makerspaces

BeAM (Be A Maker) at Carolina
BeAM has makerspaces in the Hanes Art Center (Basement Room 09) and Murray Hall (first floor). During posted hours, specialty tools are available to UNC affiliates who have completed safety orientation and equipment training. Visit the facilities page to learn about equipment,training and workshops or contact them to discuss hosting your class or event.

MAKNET
MakNet is a maker group for UNC students. MakNet allows students to connect each other with the resources they need to imagine, design and create. We aim to foster a community of makers at UNC-CH! MakNet hosts a weekly Maker Series in BeAM at the Hanes Art Center – Tuesdays from 5-7PM and the leadership group meets weekly in the Kenan Science Library Makerspace.

CHANL – CHAPEL HILL ANALYTICAL AND NANOFABRICATION LABORATORY
CHANL operates as a shared instrumentation laboratory open to UNC researchers from all departments as well as to researchers from other universities, government labs, and industry. CHANL provides training sessions for new users to get started. Users pay hourly fees to access the equipment.

CHEMISTRY: ELECTRONICS FACILITY
Circuit research and development, repair, and fabrication for the chemistry department and others.

CHEMISTRY: GLASS SHOP
Designs, fabricates, and repairs glassware for Chemistry department, as well as other UNC departments and outside interests.

COMPUTER SCIENCE – Applied Engineering Lab
The Applied Engineering Laboratory (AEL) provides facilities and expertise for building prototypes of a variety of microtechnology-based systems.

DIGITAL MEDIA LAB – Undergraduate Library
The Digital Media Lab gives UNC students, faculty and staff access to the latest in multimedia software and hardware.

ESE DESIGN CENTER
Provides consultation, design, fabrication, and assembly services in a wide range of disciplines.

MOREHEAD PLANETARIUM AND SCIENCE CENTER
The UNC Morehead Planetarium and Science Center informs and inspires the public about the foundations and frontiers of scientific discovery. Through innovative educational experiences, Morehead engages the public and the University community in a forum for interpreting contemporary science.

RESEARCH CORE FACILITIES AT UNC
UNC Research Core Facilities are shared resources which offer a wide range of services to the research community, including cutting edge technologies, high end instrumentation, technical support, and education.

SWAIN MEDIA LAB – Communication Studies
Provides support for the Department of Communication Studies current media studies production classes


Triangle University Makers

DUKE UNIVERSITY: MPS EAST/WEST MAKERSPACES
Duke’s Multimedia Project Studios are computer labs that specialize in tools for the production of multimedia and graphic content. Both labs feature high-end, integrated hardware and software that encourage imaginative creation and editing of graphics, Web pages, audio and video.

NCSU LIBRARIES: MAKERSPACE
The Hunt Library Makerspace supports students, faculty, and staff in learning about emerging technologies and bringing their creations to life. The space has two 3D printers and a laser cutter for rapid prototyping of designs.


Community Makers

DURHAM COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Durham County Public Library offers 3D printing to their patrons during a once a month Makerdays.

SPLATSPACE
Previously known as Durham Makerspace — SplatSpace is an upcoming multidisciplinary workshop and hackerspace in Durham. Splatspace is a great workspace for crafters, engineers, mad scientists, artists, programmers, tinkerers, and makers of all kinds.

FABLAB CAROLINAS
Fab Lab Carolinas fosters education, innovation and invention though community access to high-end fabrication tools that can construct your next big idea. Virtual only.

KIDZU
Kidzu Children’s Museum is a hands-on museum dedicated to inspiring young children (0-10 years) and the adults in their lives to learn through play.

THE SCRAP EXCHANGE
The Scrap Exchange is a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote creativity, environmental awareness, and community through reuse.
