Position Description
The University Libraries at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking a highly collaborative, creative and motivated individual to join the Media Resources Center (MRC) as its Media Lab Manager. Working with MRC Staff and under the direction of the Head of the MRC, the Media Lab Manager will run day-to-day operations of the MRC’s media production lab, providing leadership and planning for the lab’s media production hardware, software and storage system. The Media Lab Manager will apply expert media production skills and knowledge in support of the variety of services offered in the media labs; effectively troubleshooting, resolving tech issues, and providing consultation to our campus clients.

The Media Lab Manager will administer the suite of technical and pedagogical services and resources offered via the MRC’s lab including but not limited to: overseeing the lab instruction calendar; managing the lab’s libguides, tutorials and other online resources; researching, planning and assessment of lab instruction. Working closely with the Center’s Media Production and Instruction Technician, the Media Lab manager will schedule and teach classes and workshops, provide consultation to clients, design programs, create tutorials and related online resources, as well as provide instruction training to MRC staff.

The Media Lab Manager will oversee the MRC’s Media Equipment cage, running the circulating equipment program including: managing and maintaining the equipment for use; managing equipment inventory; managing purchase requests and reconciling receipt of equipment; researching and trialing new equipment; and engaging directly with vendors as needed. The Media Lab Manager will train all Center staff on new and existing circulating equipment, and work to forecast trends and emerging technology related to the Center’s programs and services. This position is also required to help supervise the MRC’s student staff and assist with general public service support for all of our patron services.

The MRC serves broadly across the curriculum, providing essential: documentary, cinema and new media collections; digital & media literacies instruction; research support; consultations and media production facilities. Our Center’s success stems from our ability to provide these resources effectively, efficiently and with expertise. This position will be joining a team of professionals specializing in digital literacy, media production, public service, access & description, use metrics & analytics, and resource management. This position will work directly with UNC faculty, students, and campus partners in coordination with other MRC team and library staff members; strong public service skills and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a dynamic, highly interactive, team environment are a must.

Minimum Education and Experience
•Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration; Networking Technology, or related areas and two years of experience in the Information Technology field related to the position’s role; or a
•Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position’s role, or a
•Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math or Engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the Information Technology Field related to the position’s role; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
•Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
•Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
The Media Lab Manager must have:
•Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic and team-based public service environment
•Extensive skills effectively using the MAC OS environment and Windows OS environment
•Extensive skills effectively creating with Adobe Creative Cloud
•Digital media production skills (including capture, composition and editing) using a variety of production hardware and software is required
•Knowledge of and skilled in using digital media production equipment (cameras, field recorders, mics, lighting and other peripherals)
•Ability to provide digital literacy instruction
•Strong visual, written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
•Experience with assignment and instructional design
•Experience with Mac OS X installation, configuration and basic troubleshooting
•Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while seamlessly supporting multiple clients (faculty, students and staff)
•Current awareness of developing trends in multimedia production and ability to apply it to relevant MRC research, teaching, and learning
•Coursework in Digital Media Production, Design or Communication
•Understanding of visual communication concepts and/or digital and media literacies

Special Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to move media equipment up to 30 pounds

Position/Schedule Requirements
Evening work occasionally, Night work occasionally, Weekend work occasionally

Work Schedule
8am-5pm, Monday – Friday
