The Library Congratulates the 2016-17 Student Employee Appreciation Award Winners

July 17, 2017

Carolina’s libraries are full of students studying and researching at all hours. Some 350 UNC undergraduates are also Library employees. They provide top-notch service to their fellow students and to everyone who uses the library.

To honor student employees who go above and beyond, the Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB) created the Student Employee Appreciation Award. Each honoree receives $500 from a SLAB endowment. Current undergraduates who have worked for four or more semesters at the UNC Library are eligible.

Congratulations to Prakash Kadiri, Chris Lowder, and Shelby Loyd, the winners of the 2016-17 SLAB Student Employee Appreciation Award!

Prakash Kadiri, class of 2017,for his commitment, energetic customer service, and attention to detail at Wilson Library

Prakash has been a student employee in the Research and Instructional Services department of the Wilson Special Collections Library for six semesters. His supervisor says he has distinguished himself by encouraging the use of archival material and carefully monitoring the security of those materials. Prakash was also recognized for answering reference inquiries that come in from around the world. He is known as the “go-to” student employee for challenging questions that require critical thought and good judgment.

“He represents Wilson Library very well to researchers of all levels of sophistication,” said Tim Hodgdon and Susan Bales, managers of one of Wilson Library’s reading rooms. “His modeling of excellent customer service also inspires his coworkers to consult him on library procedure, and to strive for excellence in their own conduct.”

Chris has worked six semesters at the Undergraduate Library, where his supervisor says he is a fantastic student employee. Throughout the past three years, Chris has shown initiative by picking up shifts and pitching in to do other jobs when there has been supervisor attrition.

“He’s definitely the kind of student employee we would look into promoting,” said Jodi Mills, circulation supervisor. “I hope he considers continuing on in the Library system when he graduates.”
