Dear Friends-

It has been my great privilege to serve as Interim University Librarian since the retirement of Sarah Michalak in December. During her decade at the helm of Carolina’s libraries, Sarah developed a strong and wide-ranging program that we build upon today.

In this issue, you will read about a number of recent achievements that have their roots in Sarah’s tenure. These include welcoming Maria Estorino as the director of the Wilson Special Collections Library, and continuing to build outstanding collections through the generous support of our Friends.

You will learn how a partnership between the Health Sciences Library and the Eshelman School of Pharmacy is helping students to succeed and research to flourish. Another partnership—this one between the Southern Folklife Collection at Wilson Library and Yep Rock records, based in Hillsborough, N.C.—is bringing rare archival music to a new generation of music lovers.

I have been entrusted to lead a vibrant library prepared to embrace a vibrant future. My goal during this interim period is to guide our organization from strength to strength, to ensure that the staff, the resources. the structure and commitment are in place and ready for the Libraries’ incoming leader.

Thank you for your generosity and support.  We all look forward to writing the next chapter in our history together with you.

Carol R. Hunter
Interim University Librarian and
Vice Provost for University Libraries
